The Studio
Onalee Ames Film Studio has trained and supported aspiring artists for over 25 years, working with more than 7,000 local actors, many of whom have achieved global success. Operating from its Stafford Street location and Farpoint Films corporate office, the studio connects students directly to the film industry.
We now teach from two Winnipeg studios, our primary studio is located on Academy road with additional classes held at our Stafford Street location. We keep our students close to the working film industry through the Farpoint Films office.
Offering classes in acting, comedy, screenwriting, and musical theatre, the studio helps students build skills, confidence, and authenticity. By fostering growth and sharing Winnipeg’s stories, it ensures local voices are heard on a global stage.
OAFS also has a partnership with writer, director, and screenwriter Steven Bernstein, who comes to Winnipeg from to work with many types of students to give them the LA experience.

Do not hold yourself back; do not limit yourself just because you live in Winnipeg. Let's stop doing that.
Q&A
How does Manitoba rate in the film industry?+
In 2021, the province generated $365 million in film production-related work. This came with the help of the substantial industry-leading tax credits the provincial government offered to studios. There has never been a better time to be an actor in Manitoba, with open roles, new business and support constantly growing! In 2024 this number is up to a billion and growing.
How is the community affected by increases in production work in Manitoba, aside from increased opportunity for actors and film crew?+
There’s a spillover benefit in the sense that there is an increasing demand for our transport services, catering, hospitality, accommodations, and potential set locations. For every movie that gets made over 700 businesses that are not film related get hired to help make a tv series or a movie depending on the budget. It is reported that over 300 primary jobs are offered per production (depending on the budget).
How has the Onalee Ames Film Studio changed over the years?+
Onalee Ames did take time off from the studio to produce, direct and write. She is currently working with Farpoint Films as a producer. This year she has a slate of films. She is also directing and writing as a free agent. Onalee has been able to train a team at the studio to work with her. The studio has also produced their first short film and started a production arm of the studio which will enable local film makers to start their careers. Onalee Ames Film Studio used to have two teachers. We have 7 employees and growing. We have also partnered with Steven Bernstein to teach LA based programs with more programming to come in the next 5 years. Programming has grown. We teach a voice class, a screen writing class, directing courses, and Stand -up comedy in addition to our growing acting classes. We will also offer spiritual and empowerment classes and corporate wellness and team building courses.
Can you give an example of what people can get out of an education at Onalee Ames Film Studio?+
We have trained over 3000 local actors, with more and more students getting auditions and roles each week (currently, we have students who are working on projects all over Canada and the US). Many students who were considering leaving the province are staying here to train at a fraction of the cost and benefiting from the amount of work we are having here.
